Free Grandparent Advice

My five-year old granddaughter, Sophia, called me tonight and said, “Grandpa, you’re the best person in our whole family.”

I sat up and raised my eyebrows a bit because Sophia doesn’t usually dish compliments easily. So I figured she either wanted something or she had a high fever and was a bit delirious. I cautiously thanked her, told her I loved her, and she asked if I wanted to speak to her Mom. I said okay.
When my daughter got on the phone I asked her where that came from. She said they were in the kitchen and Sophia just said it. When my daughter asked her why she felt that way she said, “because grandpa always gives me chocolate chip cookies.”

BAM!!!!!

Its like I always say, if you’re going to show up, you have to show out.

Sometimes it’s fun being the man. Even if it only lasts five minutes and requires a chocolate chip cookie payoff.

Ever..:) I don’t believe in parents buying cars for their children. My feeling is you get a job and when the time comes you buy your own car and pay for your own insurance and repairs. That’ll pretty much filter down to the grandchildren. I spoil in less significant ways..:)

“or she had a high fever and was a bit delirious!” You are so funny, George! And I have a feeling you would be at least one of her favorite people in the family, even if you ran out of chocolate chip cookies!

Nah…you don’t have to rein it in. You only do it occasionally. If it was an everyday thing then you might have to compromise. But only on occasion, we’ve earned the right to spoil with junk food. Though I do give them fruit on a regular basis also..:)

Lol…I do the same and freeze them so I always have them available. Enjoy the shore. That’s a Jersey thing. Most people not from here say the beach..:) Have fun.

Thanks Jordan, loved your post also and the Times article was very interesting. Grandparenting his an interesting road. Your children expect you to always want to babysit but as the article mention, most people want it to fit into their life as opposed to have it be their life. Thanks for reading.

I am taking notes George as we are expecting our first grandchild in October. I suspect hearing the words, “Grandpa, youโ€™re the best person in our whole family,โ€ would be enough to melt that chocolate chip cookie right out of your hand!

Thanks George! We are super excited. Our son & daughter-in-law have elected not to find out whether it is a boy or girl so it will be a surprise for all of us!
