Perhaps Love

Thirty-five years ago John Denver wrote a song dedicated to his wife Annie. They were separated at the time and headed for divorce.
As he prepared to record the song, someone decided it would be a good idea to pair a country singer with a Spanish tenor. So John Denver and Placido Domingo got together in a studio and recorded what I believe is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written.
Though it only had modest commercial success, rising to 59 on the billboard 100 and 22 on the on adult chart, it has sold over four million copies.

On this Sunday morning, following another difficult week in our world, I think we can all find time for a moment of love. What better way than through music.

This is beautiful. I do think love is everything, that it has the power to dissolve fear, hate, prejudice, everything. People aren’t loved well enough, which is what I think causes many of the problems in our world. I’m curious, did they go through with the divorce?

I agree, love has great healing powers. Yes, unfortunately they did divorce and even though he once wrote a beautiful song for his wife titled Annie, she was interviewed after his death and said Perhaps Love was her favorite of everything he wrote.

I hadn’t heard of this song before, and I have to admit, my initial reaction was that John Denver and Placido Domingo are and odd pairing. But then I listened to the song, and it was just beautiful! Thanks for sharing this, George! It is what we all need right now. “Perhaps love…” Definitely love.

As popular as he was, there was always a segment of the industry that never took him seriously and ridiculed his work. Artistry comes in many forms and sounds. Who are any of us to judge? If it touches our hearts and minds as it did with you on your trip to visit your mom, it has done enough. He was a gifted songwriter with a pleasant voice and a troubled soul, as many artists are.
