Springsteen Sunday (Vol.10, Dancing In The Dark)

Welcome back to church and the pulpit of Springsteen.

Album: Born In The USA
Song : Dancing In The Dark

This the song and the album that blew up Bruce’s popularity. He had a nice career and much of his work was critically acclaimed but he never had the widespread popularity of other artists. Until this.

Bruce had been working on Born In The USA for two years and he was done trying to complete it. But manager, Jon Landau, refused to let him give up, telling him they needed a hit song of this album. Bruce got angry and wrote Dancing. Not a bad result.

I remember when it was released, many of his hard-core fans thought he sold out by recording this type of music, which was a little less edgy for them.  I guess you can’t please everyone.

I get up in the evening
and I ain’t got nothing to say
I come home in the morning
I go to bed feeling the same way
I ain’t nothing but tired
Man I’m just tired and bored with myself
Hey there baby, I could use just a little help

You can’t start a fire
You can’t start a fire without a spark
This gun’s for hire
even if we’re just dancing in the dark

Message keeps getting clearer
radio’s on and I’m moving ’round the place
I check my look in the mirror
I wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face
Man I ain’t getting nowhere
I’m just living in a dump like this
There’s something happening somewhere
baby I just know that there is

You can’t start a fire
you can’t start a fire without a spark
This gun’s for hire
even if we’re just dancing in the dark

You sit around getting older
there’s a joke here somewhere and it’s on me
I’ll shake this world off my shoulders
come on baby this laugh’s on me

Stay on the streets of this town
and they’ll be carving you up alright
They say you gotta stay hungry
hey baby I’m just about starving tonight
I’m dying for some action
I’m sick of sitting ’round here trying to write this book
I need a love reaction
come on now baby gimme just one look

You can’t start a fire sitting ’round crying over a broken heart
This gun’s for hire
Even if we’re just dancing in the dark
You can’t start a fire worrying about your little world falling apart
This gun’s for hire
Even if we’re just dancing in the dark
Even if we’re just dancing in the dark
Even if we’re just dancing in the dark
Even if we’re just dancing in the dark
Hey baby

The interesting thing about this video is that it not only created the first hit single off the album but it jump started the career of a young fresh-faced model by the name of Courteney Cox. Name ring a bell? For those of you too young to remember, Courteney dances with Bruce at the end of this video. After that, everyone wanted to hire her and her career took off with some not so successful movies. Fortunately she had a nice run playing Alex’s girlfriend on Family Ties before landing the role of Monica on the long running television show, Friends, some ten years after Dancing In The Dark.

So here’s a bit of the past with a couple of people who did all right for themselves following the release of this video.

See you down the road.

He’s so young and fresh-faced in this one! Of course he picked Courtney… check out those eyes of hers.

Lol….well, I’m a guy so hot is not something I would use to describe him. But I understand the attraction for women. Hard to believe that video is 23 years old. When did that happen.

My friends and I all wanted to BE Cortney Cox! This is the song that made my 17 year old daughter start listening to Bruce. She always felt his other song were “too deep or depressing”!

That’s funny. That song and the USA album transformed Springsteen from a performer with a regional fan base to one whose popularity blew up nationally and internationally, even though many of his hard core fans were upset because they thought he sold out. So your daughter is in good company..:) I don’t think you really get Springsteen or appreciate his lyrics until you’re a little older. He is one of the best poets out there and his lyrics are amazing but you have to really listen to appreciate them and younger kids need some time..:) but I’m glad she’s a fan. You raised her well.😀
